Abject Failure

October 5th 2009 18:27
Failure is a mindset, and in my opinion it is the common one held by the vast majority of people. I often find myself looking at the negative aspects of a change, event or individual. This looking at the negative is exactly what I am talking about. Looking for the negative is looking for failure.

If you dwell on the faults of anything it becomes difficult if not impossible to see the way to success. this can be in relationships, business or even in planning for the future.

I try to catch myself when I start to focus on the failures. I don't want anyone to misunderstand the point I am trying to make. You need to look at the actual failures and mistakes and try to understand what went wrong, but you should never take that lesson as an Abject failure. Get over it and on to the next challenge with the new lessons learned.

Right at this moment many of us are experiencing the same phenomenon. We are all watching jobs disappear (maybe even our own), we are seeing failures all around. For every failure I witness I see an opportunity.

A prime example, newspapers world wide are going under. they are faced with extinction. Why? Well I realized why 15 years ago and wrote a business plan to avoid the same mistakes. Last year the market was prime for my idea and we started the new paper. It has been profitable since the first issue and is continuing to grow.

The act of identifying the failures allowed me to formulate a plan to avoid the same mistakes. I have been successful where giants are failing. Unlike the existing papers I did not focus on where the failures were but identified them and focused on how to avoid them.

The same is true of any invention or innovation. I hold a few patents because I did not dwell on how it is done but looked for the mistakes and then focused all my attention on how to overcome those errors.

To me Abject Failure is defined as any error that does not lead to a change or innovation and does lead to collapse. I have no problem with failure, it is part of learning and invention. I despise Abject Failure.
