Life Putty - Life Is What You Shape It

Life Putty - November 2009

So You Want To Be A Blogger?

November 22nd 2009 21:20
It can be a dream come true, but just like any dream made reality it takes more than desire, it takes hard work.

Recently I have been asked to create a series of E-Learning courses on SEO, web promotion/marketing and blogging for Savvy-U.com. None are live yet, still in development but they are coming soon. While scripting this series of courses I came to a realization, Blogging as a job is no different than any other business. I think too many people see blogging as a dream job, of working an hour a day promoting themselves as some sort of minor celebrity with riches and fame only a short effortless step away. All you need to do is build a blog and the rest will come.

Anyone who has gone down the path of blogging will tell you it is a hard road to success, and the vast majority of people fail at it, or give up after a few months. The truth is you can reach the dream of working a couple hours a day as a minor celebrity; however it takes years of hard work dedication and more than a little luck.

How?
There is no difference in the roadmap for success when it comes to blogging than there is for any other business. It all starts with research.

This research needs to answer many questions. As with any business you need to know your client. Who are they? What do they want? Where are they?

You also need to know who your competitors are. Where are they failing to meet the needs and desires of the customer? A very important follow up to this is; how does your product fulfill this need? Don't think there are NO competitors, there are, always competitors.

Are there potential partnerships out there to take advantage of? For example if you write about Photoshop tricks and techniques then Adobe (the software company who makes Photoshop) is a very strong potential partner. It is in their best interest to promote sites like yours.

I tend to let the research define the product for me. And by product I mean the broad definition, it can be information, service or hard good, it does not matter. What is important is that your product offers value to the customer. In the end this is what makes for a successful blog, website or company. Offer the Best Value for the money.
