Understanding SEO

This has been the topic of my life the last several months. I am frequently paid to do SEO work for corporate sites. Anyone in the game knows that there is far more to it than just doing on page SEO, and it is all that other stuff that takes the real effort and time.
I once heard someone call themselves the mechanic who drives a beater car. I often fall into that category in regards to my own websites. I rarely do much SEO work for them, and I tend to neglect them for long periods of time as well. Regardless some of those sites rank very well for their chosen key words, however they could be much more.
So, being mostly out of work (just doing little freelance jobs here and there) I have been taking the time to work through all of my sites. I am actually a little overwhelmed by the shear volume of work that needs to be done through the 25 sites I own... It is rather daunting, but I have developed some tools and techniques to assist in making the sites perform better. And I am taking the time to write a few books on a wide variety of ways to increase site traffic and Search Engine ranking.
When all is said and done, they should be Google first page, each for their given keywords, and each have several thousand high PR inbound links... Should is the operative word, as it rarely goes entirely according to plan.
The lesson I have learned through all of this is to not let the assets you own rot just to work on the paying gigs. It is much cheaper and easier to just keep things up to date, as you go, than it is to revisit several thousand posts, and several dozen sites, 6 months later.
