Want to Make a Million?
July 6th 2009 20:10
A million what? Right. A million Yen, a million dollars or a million nose hairs. The context sets the value. Without it we have no real idea what we are actually speaking of. I hate to belabor the point, but it seems most people don't understand what "success" means to them. Even less well defined is the idea of being rich. Once this concept is defined it is then of paramount importance that the goal we have just made concrete is attainable through a plan of action.
Why am I on about the definition again? Well, projects have goals to attain success the same that an individual should. However when the goal is poorly defined, the path to said goal is a circuitous route. I like the journey nearly as much as the destination, however I hate having to retrace my steps to find the path because the end goal is shifting due to a lack of context. In my opinion this is the major reason projects fail.
Where I have been successful in my life is in labors that have followed a plan to fruition. It is often more important to success that you fulfill the initial plan, than it is that the end goal is accurate. Focus. Stay on target.
Wow! Did I just type that?
Yes I did.
Once a plan is established, there is little benefit gained from changing course. It is better to finish and then if necessary to train your eye on the new goal than it is to switch mid course.
Keep focus, stay on target.
Beyond all of this talk of goals and plans make sure the goal you set for yourself is actually what you want. Also make sure that whatever it is you are doing, you enjoy it. The journey is as much a part of the joy as is the final destination. I think most people, including myself, focus so much on the end goal that they often forget that. But don't lose focus on the path to get you to your destination. Balance.
Goals and plans, and paths and ladders. Focus and balance. Really it comes down to finding the things in life that make you happy. And then doing what it takes to maximize the time doing those things. As simple as that. Find what you love, set a goal, make a plan, focus on the plan, and enjoy the ride!
